Why I Did This?
Started looking at some platform descriptions and noticed the character limits were all over the place. Got curious – what actually fits within 15 to 30 characters? Sounds easy, right? Yeah, no.
How I Tried First (The Wrong Way)
Figured I’d just type stuff out freehand and count. Bad move. Here’s what happened:
- Opened a blank doc and typed random phrases.
- Manually counted characters like counting sheep. Slow.
- Got distracted, lost count three times on one line. Frustrating!
- Kept blowing past 28 characters without realizing it. Annoying!
Spent way too long for zero usable results. Total waste. Needed a smarter plan.
Finding the Fix (The Lightbulb Moment)
Remembered that plain ol’ text editors usually show character count down in the corner. Opened a new document and bam, there it was.
- Started typing potential short phrases straight into the doc.
- Kept my eyes glued to the counter like a hawk.
- Aim? Anything greenlit only if it landed perfectly between 18 and 28. Non-negotiable.

The Real Struggle (Even With the Counter)
Even watching the counter, hitting exactly 18-28 was so tricky:
- Many phrases felt “done” at like 15 or 16. Too short! Had to scramble for synonyms or reword.
- Other times I’d hit 26 characters and the idea felt incomplete. Adding just one word? Boom, 29 or 30! Way too close to the line. Felt like cheating.
- Sometimes landed on 28 exactly, but it sounded unnatural or forced. Had to scrap it and rewrite.
Took way more tweaking than I thought to get stuff that was concise, made sense, and fit the count. That 18-character minimum? Seriously trips you up!
My Practical Solution
Finally landed on a solid workaround. Still using the counter, obviously. But learned:
- Start with phrases you know are naturally longer than 15. Easier to trim than stretch.
- Aim for the mid-range like 22-26 first. Leaves breathing room.
- Test final versions rigorously. Cut, add, swap words. Relentless.
Got my list of clean, within-limit phrases. Not perfect, but works. This constraint forces cleaner writing, surprisingly. Worth the hassle for small wins!
